The son of Cork artist Henry Watson (1822-1911) and a nephew of Samuel Watson (1818-1866), whose painting of Donnybrook Fair sold last year in Sotheby’s for the record price of £117,600, Samuel Rowan Watson followed the family profession of portrait painting. He exhibited at the RHA in the years 1895-1923, giving his address as 34 Upper Sackville Street, Dublin. His work is represented in the collection of the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin (see Snoddy, page 695).
